About

The coins with which this sculpture is made were taken out of circulation following a historic period of hyper inflation in Bolivia in the 1980’s. They also correspond to a time when the country was transitioning from dictatorship to democracy. The discontinued and overabundant coins were then spontaneously integrated as embroidery elements into the production of folkloric dance costumes. These dances frequently narrate colonial histories of exploitation and wealth. Still available today, these coins occupy several dissimilar cultural spaces at once. Untitled (Coins) plays with the idea of value and how its redefined as it moves between historic, economic, cultural and aesthetic spheres.
