This delicate sculpture is made of a single floor to ceiling strand of cigarette ash strung through a thin chain. Frequently the artist inserts elements of his own biography in his work. Bedoya became enthralled by his aunt Patricia’s growing cigarette ash while spending time with her as a child. Each cigarette functions as a unit of time, a ritual offering (cigarettes are regularly gifted to spirits and deities in Bolivia), and as a reminder of our own ephemeral nature.
The work does not employ adhesives or hardening materials of any sort.
